In August 1973, a back to school party thrown in a community room and DJ’d by DJ Kool Herc changed music forever. DJ Kool Herc set up his turntables and introduced a technique showcasing his ability to switch from record to record, as well as isolate and repeat music breaks, lead to the creation of the hip hop genre. The elements of Hip Hop are The DJ, the breakers, the taggers, and the MC. 50 years later, we’re celebrating the Hip Hop culture with a number of shows featuring many of the originators. I’m chronicling #HipHop50 through my camera lens, capturing these moments so we can all celebrate them.
